Discover our edit of pre-owned Gucci bags and embrace a glamorous Italian aesthetic. Synonymous with luxury, the house’s accessories are an easy way to add a touch of opulence to your look. The Florence-based brand has been producing leather accessories since 1921, but material shortages during WW2 led the label to also experiment with other fabrics, and the iconic tonal-brown GG canvas and green and red webbing were born.
These two signatures alongside bamboo handles (which could still be imported from Japan) are what make the brand’s designs instantly recognisable.
Popular pre-loved Gucci bags
Over its 100 year history, Gucci has created some of the most sought after bags in fashion including the Marmont, the Guccissima, the Dionysus and the Soho Disco. Arguably the most iconic Gucci bag however, is the Jackie bag. The relaxed leather tote gained instant popularity after Jackie Kennedy was spotted carrying it, and it is now one of the most covetable pre-owned bags on the market. The bag has been reissued many times, first under the creative direction of Tom Ford in 1999 and then again by Frida Gianni in 2009, but it is the original designs that are the most in demand.
Gucci bags and artisanal craftsmanship
All Gucci bags are made in Italy or Spain and are constructed entirely by hand. As they are crafted by skilled artisans and not mass produced in a factory, only a limited number of accessories are created each year. The brand uses only the finest Italian leathers and exotic skins, as well as its famous Gucci Floral silk which was created at the request of Grace Kelly. The house is also known for its signature selection of hardware which includes the horsebit, the piston lock and the lady lock.
How to spot an authentic Gucci bag
A real Gucci bag can be recognised by its serial number tag, which can be found on a leather label inside the bag. The serial number tag will be rectangular or square in shape, and should feature the trademark symbol and the phrase ‘made in Italy’ all in lowercase. One important thing to remember is Gucci bags released in the 1990s will differ slightly. Their serial tags will have slightly rounded corners and the trademark symbol will not be there. The ‘Made in Italy’ phrase and the word ‘Gucci’ will also both be all in uppercase in bags of this era.
Why pre-owned Gucci handbags are investment pieces
Vintage Gucci bags are highly sought after to this day because they transcend trends. Their timeless shapes, logo hardware and eclectic prints make them a chic way to instantly elevate your look. Statement top handle styles with iconic monogram canvas age beautifully over time, while some of the expertly crafted leather designs from 50 years ago look as modern as the pieces you see grace the catwalk today. Alongside pieces you can wear right now are rare Gucci collectors bags, that only increase in value as the years go on.
