What should I do if my Fendi bag’s hardware tarnishes?

One of the beautiful things about pre-owned luxury handbags is the quiet story they tell. Over time, small details like hardware patina or soft wear at the corners become part of that narrative - subtle, elegant signals of a life well-lived. At The Hosta, we celebrate this character. A gentle patina on your Fendi bag’s hardware is entirely natural - and expected.

Fendi often uses gold- or palladium-finished brass for clasps, buckles, and logo plates. While these materials are made to last, exposure to air, moisture, and the natural oils from our hands will, over time, cause subtle tarnishing. In most cases, this is purely aesthetic and doesn’t affect the function or value of the bag. In fact, for many collectors, it adds authenticity and charm.

If you'd prefer to restore the original lustre, a light polish with a jewellery cloth can go a long way. We advise avoiding chemical cleaners or abrasive cloths, which can strip away plated finishes or cause scratching. For delicate or intricate hardware - especially engraved logo plaques - it’s best to avoid DIY methods and consult a specialist.

We've partnered with The Seam, details of which can be found on our handbag repair and restoration page. Whether it’s a Fendi Baguette with softened gold-toned closures or a Peekaboo with oxidised hinges, experts at The Seam understand the materials and legacy behind each piece - and can help to restore hardware, lining, leather and more

Above all, remember: slight tarnishing is part of the beauty of vintage. It means your bag has lived - and that’s what makes it special.
